Shadow People

Now that Tom has gone back to school (as a professor, not a student!) I'm back to the old tripod for blog photos for the most part. The other day when I was setting up to take a few shots I had the hardest time positioning everything so that the shadow of the tripod wasn't showing up in every photo. Somehow tripod-shadow isn't nearly as charming as these vintage photos with their shadow people lurking about.

  1. I was just thinking this morning while I was taking some outfit shots that I miss having Chris around to take pictures for me. Almost all of my blog shots are tripod-based... Oh well! :) Yay for professorships. And these photographs are so charming and a little bit creepy, with the shadows looming...

  2. I love the pictures where they kept the camera at stomach level, so nostalgic!

  3. My husband complained about not wanting to take pictures of me every day and how it's a burden, so I'm going to be trying a tripod too... I'm intimidated!

  4. These shadow people remind me of friendly ghosts. I especially love the last ones where there are no people and only shadows.I think the one of the man and the woman stretched out on the beach is so sweet.

  6. I've got a great photo of my grandfather with a woman's shadow framed in my room. It is my favorite. These are lovely!

  7. I really love when I see 'shadow people' in old photos, it's also interesting to see how our way of taking photos have changed (as all of them are using the waist-level viewfinder). What does your beau teach?

  9. I love this! What a great detail to talk about. Its very inspiring, might give it a try myself. I think you take lovely photos with your tripod. I'd be scared to do that, lol.

  10. Had folks actually tagged their photos as "shadow showing" or something?

I'm just about to start learning the ways of the tripod myself...

  13. I also was enjoying the fact that photographers' shadows look so different these days, with the camera being held at our faces now. Or for that matter, most people just hold out the camera, look at the screen, and shoot, don't they? I always get a kick out of when I hand people my camera and they look at it strangely because they actually have to put the viewfinder to their eyes. :)

  14. I do love old photos but I do love most about old photos is all the odd photos, I have a bunch with people with no heads, photos of body parts, of clouds and I love all these with shadows. It makes you think who were they, especially those with no one in them :)

  19. Thanks so much for all of your comments!

For those of you wondering, all of these photos came from a Flickr group of "shadow people" photos. The link is at the bottom of the post.

And for those of you who asked, Tom is a professor at the local art college. He teaches graphic design courses.

    Thanks again! :)
