The other day while Tom and I were out for a sunny drive we stopped beside these train tracks to snap a few photos. We were out there for a few minutes when we heard the train whistle off in the distance. Turns out were were standing by the Strasburg Railroad line. We've ridden the train a couple of times when we've had visitors in town. It's an old timey train that takes you all through Amish country.

We quickly got excited about the prospect of having the train whiz by in a photo. The only problem with that idea was as soon as the train approached and started blowing its whistle I turned into a giggling mess and ended up having to just turn away from the camera. Oh well! I think we got a decent shot out of it any way. ;) It was just so loud I think my powers of concentration temporarily stopped functioning!

  1. oh these are my favorite photos you've shot in awhile, the train setting is amazing. Now that I live in DC I rarely ever see trains, yet my neighborhood back home used to be a farm for a railroad tycoon so of course we have tracks running through the entire town, I miss the sound of it

  2. I used to have an old train that went by my house every morning at 6 AM. I used to hate it but now I miss it. I heard one this morning (I live right outside DC), looked up in surprise & smiled nostalgically. Cute.

  37. What luck that a train was coming! I tried to do photos once on the tracks near my house and didn't have any luck at all. No train, camera battery quickly dies, got black filth all over me...ugh...

  50. Oh shoot. Pesky little typos always sneaking up. Meant to say that the first photo* was simply perfect!

I can recall a time when I was helping a friend with his photo thesis. I heard the sound of a train whistle and started running toward the train in time to get the whizzing boxcars as the backdrop. Luckily, I was wearing a mask so I could ignore all the cars lined up waiting for the train to pass with nothing better to do than watch a boy with a camera photograph a girl in a mask holding balloons! Your remote location is much more suitable.
