Homework Help

caitlin

Caitlin wrote to me with a class assignment that was giving her a bit of trouble. I think if we all put our heads together we can come up with some examples to help her out... any suggestions?

  3. Marc Jacobs Spring 2009. Fitted waist detail, collared blouses, checkered patterns, strong shoulders. A really popular collection.
    XOXO

  4. I agree about the Marc Jacobs. What about Balmain with the strong shoulders and military detailing on the jacket?

  6. Didn't Alexander Wang just do a show with swallow-tail jackets? Here's a video (a link to Preen, too).

  7. Nina Ricci spring 2009 RTW! It has lots and lots of gigot sleeves. (I did a giant, 126 page PDF last year that defines fashion terms and shows 3 contemporary examples for my own history of fashion class.)

  12. Current YSL ads for Spring/Summer 2010...you can totally see the influence in the shoulders etc.

  13. John Galliano for Christian Dior Fall/Winter 2010 (can be seen at style.com), though the silhouette there is a tad more Edwardian than Victorian. However, I consider him to be a designer highly influenced by both Victorian and Edwardian fashion.

  16. -Christian Lacroix (even look at his perfume, Absynthe inspired by the drink of poets and artists in 19th century Paris)
-Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 2003; models wore 19th century hats; often cites this century in other collections as well
    -Christian Dior Spring 2010
-Also, totally agree with those who mentioned Vivienne Westwood.

  21. I immediately thought of John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood. These two always borrow from the past in their collections. I found this article about bustles http://www.morbidoutlook.com/fashion/historical/2003_08_bustle.html which mentions both of those designers. The corset is another 19th century item that pops up a lot in modern designs.

    Good Luck with your project!
