Spring Photos

Spring 2011

More often than not I awake early on Sunday mornings to Tom's shadowy figure quietly slipping out the door, camera bag slung over his shoulder, as he wanders off to photograph some long forgotten home or abandoned factory (his explorations are well documented here). This week was no exception. In my sleepy haze I rarely realize exactly where he's off to until he returns to tell me about the morning's adventure. When he returned this Sunday he instantly told me that he knew I would love the house he had just photographed. When he showed me a few of the shots I could barely contain my excitement; peeling paint, pretty wallpaper, beautiful windows with light pouring in. I'd been mulling over the idea of doing some sort of spring editorial style shoot for the blog and knew this would be just the place.

I grabbed some clothes and shoes (all things I've been wanting to wear if only the weather would cooperate) and we headed out the door. Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperating and I was pretty much freezing the whole time! But the house is scheduled for demolition and we knew we'd better grab the chance to photograph it before it's all razed. I could see my breath in the house and if you look at these shots full sized you can see all the goose bumps on my legs! Despite the cold, we had a lot of fun exploring each room. The wallpaper in the house was mind-blowingly perfect! It's so sad to know it will all be gone soon.

I braved the cold for as long as I could and we ended up with lots of photos. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I want to do with all of them. I think Tom is going to help me make a little lookbook where you can flip the pages but since we've never done that before we're going to have to figure it out. Until then, here's a little sampling of what we ended up with.

  3. wow, that is really sad that the house is going to be demolished. i always feel so sad when i go to estate sales in old houses that are so far gone, they can't be restored. the photos look gorgeous though!

  5. babe alert! These photos are gorgeous, that house seems amazing. Sad that it's going to be torn down! Those flipping page book things are sometimes really annoying to view, my computer hates loading them... I like just regular photos the most! Not that you asked, haha.

  6. This is so gorgeous. I'm so sad that it's going to be gone, and something lesser will probably take its place :(

I love how you find so many abandoned places though! I'm always afraid to approach any!

  14. Gorgeous! (Both you and the pictures, that is!)
How sad such a lovely building is going to be gone soon : ( At least you've immortalized it with these lovely pictures. This probably sounds sort of creepy, but there's an abandoned farm near me that I always explored as a kid, and they have almost identical wallpaper to the one by the stairs in the last shot; I love it!

  15. Great pictures! That house makes such a good backdrop and the idea of tearing it down is making me sad! My husband and I have a thing for renovating abandoned homes and we've fixed up ones much, much worse than this one. I hate losing history.

PS - You need to drive down to Petersburg, VA. We have a whole town of old abandoned buildings (well, almost) and "explore" them on a regular basis. They're great for pictures.

  20. That house is too gorgeous to be torn down! It's so sad how some cities/businesses don't feel the need repurpose old homes or buildings. Its so wasteful. And if that place gets torn down just so ugly condos can be built in its place, then I just died a little inside.

Anywho, your pictures are definitley gorgeous and your outfits are amazing. It is so much like an editorial in Vogue magazine.
