After months and months of dry weather it finally started raining last night. Great for the city - bad for pictures. Especially since said rain caused my camera to slip from its perch and land in the mud.

Updating the blog has become increasingly difficult since my boss has returned from his buying trip in Europe. My life has become very The Devil Wears Prada lately. Today I was able to snap a few photos when I stopped by the post office to mail some Ebay packages.

Today's ensemble is brought to you by laziness. Would you think less of me if I told you this is the sweatshirt I slept in last night? After spending a relaxing weekend at Arrowhead Lake, breathing fresh mountain air with no television, no clocks and no worries, I just couldn't bring myself to put too much thought into getting ready for work this morning.

I always hear people talking about buying "investment pieces", thing they will wear for years. I guess in this day and age of fast fashion, I've never really been one to shop like that. In an effort to cut down on my spending and consumption, I've been more carefully weighing my purchases. I feel like this cape from Topshop is my first "investment piece". I think it's a classic piece that I can wear for years. Uh, Oh. This might be a sign of my getting older! Ha.

Street Style
As I've stated before, street style blogs have been much more inspirational to me lately than any magazine. My new favorite is Altamira NYC. It's been around for at least a few months but I've only just run across it. Based in New York City (obviously from the name), it is a team of photographers that "scouts the sidewalks of New York City and other major world capitals for the unique, the distinct, and the fashion forward." As much as I enjoy the Sartorialist, I have found that his subjects have become increasing the fashion elite. I much rather see what an average girl on the street manages to put together on a modest budget with vintage finds and H&M than the latest ensemble Anna Dello Russo in donning. After all, isn't that what "street fashion blogs" are really all about? I've found that lately I've been drawn toward more "edgy" or "tough" looks rather than the girly, frilly looks I've favored in the past and I think the overall aesthetic of the photos on this site appeals to that side of me. Ever since watching "Control" I've just wanted to dress in tight black jeans, heels and a black leather jacket. I swear that movie really got in my head!

Officially. The. Best. Sweater. Ever.

My friend Lori decided to show up to work today wearing this lovely sweater she picked up at the local Goodwill for $5 . Seriously. It has kittens playing on it. KITTENS! On a sweater! I'm in awe. I just had to share.

Those Boots!
On Saturday morning I woke up super early to catch a bus to a vintage warehouse sale north of LA. Two buses and over an hour later I finally arrived and was the first (yay!) in line at the door. I've never managed to arrive before the doors open and alway end up picking through all of the leftovers. Second in line to me was one of those impossibly cool girls looking impossibly put together for that early on a Saturday morning. She was wearing the most amazing three buckle boots I've ever seen, with the top buckle undone, casually paired with black tights, a black mini dress and a studded navy peacoat. If she hadn't been completely preoccupied pecking away on her Blackberry, I would have asked her where she got them. When the doors opened I went straight for the sale pile and started grabbing everything that looked interesting while she walked straight past the sale pile to the full price racks. See? Impossibly cool. Anyway, the point is I still can't stop thinking about her boots! I've searched everywhere I can think of online and haven't seen a pair just like them, but I have seen some others that might do. I'd like them to have flat soles (or a lug sole with a small heel at most), be mid-calf in height, and buckle closed. Not too much for a girl to ask, right? Here are some ideas...

From Steve Madden.

From Steve Madden & TopShop.

From Wedins (I don't know if you can order these from the US).
Of course all of these are real leather and well out of my price range, but I'll keep my eye out for something similar that's within my reach. With grunge being the next big thing to come back into fashion I'm sure we'll all be seeing more of the tougher looking boots in the future. If only I'd kept my Doc Martens from high school!

Hair Evolution
Thanks to everyone who put in their two cents on the should-I-or-shouldn't-I hair cutting issue. A lot of valid points were made about versatility and trying something new. There were 59 "go for its" and only 12 "what are you thinkings" so the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the fringe. I guess that means I'll be visiting a hair salon in the very near future. In that spirit, here are a few shots of hair past...
This is shortly after I moved to LA. It's in one of those terrible "I'm growing my hair out" phases. Also, your first glimpse at my natural color.
Here are the ill advised d0-it-yourself bangs.
I never could decide what to do with my hair after that so it just grew and grew and grew.
And last but not least, here I am the first time I dyed my its current color.

My ensemble was heavily influenced by the girls over at Moderniteter so I thought I'd give credit where credit is due. They've quickly become one of my favorite fashion blogging sites, even though I can't read a word of it. I love the casual way they mix modern pieces with vintage all in a muted color palette.

Today is one of those beautiful LA days that you walk outside and literally forget what month it is. Is it March? April? November? Really? November? Yes, Thanksgiving is just next week. Unbelievable! One of the spring looks that I loved was white dresses with black leggings and shoes. Since I pretty much thought it was spring today, I decided to take advantage.

Blogger has not been my friend this morning. I've been trying to upload photos and keep getting error messages. I finally got this one to load, so that's it for now. Nothing too exciting anyway. My boss, who mostly lives overseas, is coming back in to town tomorrow so I'm gearing up for some long office hours until the end of the year.

The Great Hair Debate
For a while now I've been riding a pendulum back and forth between cutting my hair or growing it out. My hair is longer now than it has been since I was oh, I don't know... thirteen years old? For years I kept it pixie short and platinum blond, then there were the shorter in the back longer in the front bob years and the latest transformation was from my natural blond to the reddish brown you see now. In other words, I'm constantly changing hair styles. I'm usually pretty impulsive when it comes to haircuts and color. I'll decide I want to change it and within a day or two it's done. I'm still growing out the bangs that I decided I needed a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, I decided I needed bangs right that minute and just took a pair of scissors into the bathroom with me. This time I've promised my boyfriend that if I decide to go with bangs again, I'll let a professional do the snipping. Believe me, it's for my own good. So, with that said I'm introducing the very first Sally Jane Vintage should-I-or-shouldn't-I hair cut poll. Place your vote (upper right corner) and I'll let you know the results at the end of the week. Here are some photos of hair cuts I've been considering...

I hear a lot of people say they are turned off by vintage clothes because they don't want to wear something someone else has worn. But for me, the history of the piece is one of the things I love the most about vintage clothing. If I find a pretty dress, especially one that is homemade, I can only wonder about who made it, where they wore it, why they picked that certain fabric. I have memories that are directly linked to what I was wearing on a particular day. Don't we all remember what we wore on our first day of school? Our first date? Don't you wonder when you wear a piece of vintage clothing if someone has memories attached to it?

Super Lucky Cat
According to their website Super Lucky Cat offers "Recycled One-of-a-Kind Clothing: Environmentally conscious clothes made using recycled and remnant materials." Sounds great to me! They have tops, bottoms, dresses and even sample pieces available through their own website and you can find a variety of their pieces in Urban Outfitters' Urban Renewal section. Even if you can't afford one of their reasonably priced pieces, their is a lot of inspiration to be found in just browsing.

I was having a very hard time with the self portraits today. I was trying to take some photos in a new spot, but I couldn't seem to find a place to balance the camera and when I did find a place, I'd look at the photo and half of my head would be cut off. It wasn't helping that I had an audience of construction workers. One of them saw my plight and finally took mercy on me. He came over and asked in broken English if he could take my picture. I told him in broken Spanish I would very much appreciate that. Well, I don't know what happened but when he gave the camera back to me, there was no picture on it. I guess it just wasn't meant to be today.

Over the weekend I finally saw "Control", the movie about Ian Curtis, and I've got Joy Division on repeat. It's a wonderfully dark, brooding movie and I recommend it even if you're not familiar with the band or their music.

Flickr Girls
When I first started this blog, I decided that I would include a monthly post featuring whatever actress or model or magazine was particularly inspiring for me. What I didn't anticipate was discovering an entire subculture of girls from all over the world that are just as interested in fashion and thrifting as I am. Everyday I look at the pictures posted on Wardrobe Remix and find countless ways to be inspired. To me this is better than magazines or styled actresses because these girls are styling themselves by their own means and usually a pretty tight budget. The group, started by Tricia of Bits and Bobbins, posts photos of their everyday ensembles on Flickr. If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend it. Or better yet, you can join the group. Here are some of its recent highlights.

dress: H&M

I splurged on this sweater last Fall because I thought it would be a versatile piece that I could wear over and over. It has asymmetrical buttons that aren't really assigned to any particular button hole, so you can button it any way you want. The result is either a loose sweater with a big sailor-type collar that hangs over your shoulders or a fitted cardigan with a collar that bunches up around the neck (in a good way). I had to take it up under the arms because it wasn't cut high enough for me - I have a thing about sweaters or jackets with saggy armpits. Ugh, they are the worst.

New at Sally Jane Vintage
Here's what's new Sally Jane Vintage today. For the next couple of weeks, the store is undergoing a make-over: bigger pictures, new backdrop, a new look for the EBay pages. It's partially done for this week's posts and will be complete for next week's. I'm really happy with the results and I hope you'll like it too. Thanks for looking as always!

It was finally cool enough this morning to break out the lovely cape given to me by Jesse at Humane Recipe who runs a great blog from which we could all learn a thing or two. The inside of the cape is just as pretty as the outside, so I had to show you that part too. Everything else here is my default outfit for when I don't want to think about getting dressed. Jeans? Check. Tee shirt? Check. Boots? Check. Throw on a vest so I can appear to have put some thought into this? Check.
