Thrift Finds

Here are some of my favorite thrift finds as of late. Most of the clothes and shoes I've found are going straight into the store but these black t-strap flats and brown woven sandals with wooden heels found their way into my closet. Speaking of closet, these two silly little vintage oil paintings from Goodwill are going to be hung on my closet walls. Last but certainly not least, I'm sure you'll be seeing lots of this brown leather bag. It has turquoise and white woven details and is just the type of Native American inspired accessory I've been searching for.

What I'm Wearing

dress: vintage (Ebay)
vest: vintage (Slow on Melrose, Los Angeles)
shoes & bag: vintage (America's Thrift, B'ham, AL)
locket: vintage (America's Thrift, B'ham, AL)
bracelet: Target
sunglasses: H&M

Today's adventures took me to the Salvation Army. I found a pair of high waisted Gloria Vanderbilt jeans that I'm hoping will become my new favorite jeans. In the world of non-clothing finds, I stumbled upon a small collection of antique wooden sewing spools (some with the thread still on them) and scooped them up right away. When I got to the cash register, the lady working behind the counter asked me what they were. I told her and she said that someone else had just bought a whole bunch of them. Argh! At least I got what was left. I'll try to take some photos of them for you.

Yesterday was supposed to be the official start of summer and the day definitely lived up to that. The temperatures reached over 80 degrees. While we were out exploring on this beautiful day, we discovered this empty Amish farm. The entire place is for sale and they were having an open house. We were even able to go inside the early 19th century Victorian farmhouse. As I was wandering around the vast rooms, I began to fantasize about buying it and fixing it up. But those dreams were quickly dashed when I looked around and remembered that there was not even any electricity in the house. It was an Amish house after all.

We spent yesterday afternoon at a family picnic in the park. It was such a beautiful day to be outside. We put pennies on the train tracks, made clover bracelets and discovered a nest of baby birds in the gazebo.

What I'm Wearing

Thanks again for the photos, Tom.

romper: H&M
tee: American Apparel
sweater: vintage (Salvation Army)
tights: UO
boots: vintage (Salvation Army)
bag & scarf: vintage (Salvation Army)
sunglasses: vintage (Root's Market)

I never really know what the weather is going to be like these days. One second it's sunny and warm, the next it's cool and breezy. I layered up to walk to the Farmer's Market but ended up ditching the sweater and scarf.

What I'm Wearing

Thanks for the photos Tom!

tee: from The National
jeans: Superfine
jacket: H&M
scarf: H&M
shoes: Converse
sunglasses & bag: vintage

The last couple of days we've had visitors from Alabama staying with us. We've been running around town doing fun touristy things like visiting the Hans Herr House and feeding the (baby!) horses, riding the Strasburg Railroad, eating ice cream at the creamery and playing mini golf. Hmmm... maybe we should have visitors more often!

New at Sally Jane Vintage

Here's your peak at what's going up in the store today. More adorable rompers. summery ethnic print dresses and 80's acid wash. Don't miss out! Thanks as always. Love ya!

What I'm Wearing

dress: vintage (Wasteland on Melrose)
tee: American Apparel
jacket: vintage (little boy's: Salvation Army, Pennsylvania)
shoes: vintage (Salvation Army, Pennsylvania)
bag: vintage (America's Thrift, B'ham, Alabama)

When we moved to PA in January I packed all of my summer clothes into a big box. About a week ago I was doing some spring cleaning and decided it was finally time to unpack the box. I was so happy to see all of my summery vintage dresses. I lived in them in LA, but since moving to the cold northeast I haven't had much occasion to wear them. Hopefully you'll be seeing more of them now that the weather has started to warm up.

The Snail & The Cyclops

Every month I like to highlight one source of fashion inspiration. This month it's been adorable Effie from The Snail & The Cyclops. I know I'm not the first person out here in the blogosphere to sing her praises but I just couldn't help myself! After looking through her photos I always end up craving prim skirts and dresses, vintage handbags and granny style ankle boots.

When ever someone asks me to define my style I always come up blank. I think this is because what I wear is so dependent on my moods and whims of the moment. I swing from one extreme to the other, at one moment looking like a 50's housewife, another looking a bit like Patti Smith. I've never been able (or willing really) to pin down one look for myself. But Effie definitely has a look all her own. She seems to have a natural talent for putting together looks that are decidedly vintage and modern all at once. And since she's opening an Etsy store we can all benefit from her eye for vintage fashions and accessories.

'Cause This Is Thriller, Thriller Night...

jeans: Superfine
t-shirt: thrifted
jacket: H&M
scarf: H&M
boots: vintage

Last night, after the rain finally stopped and the clouds broke, my boyfriend and I walked over to the cemetery across the street from our apartment. Everytime the moon would peek out from behind the clouds, I would start to hear "Thriller" in my head!

What I'm Wearing

photos by Tom B.

dress: vintage (Crossroads on Melrose)
shoes: vintage (Slow on Melrose)
bag: vintage (America's Thrift, B'ham, AL)
necklace: vintage (my grandmother's)

I always enjoy reading where other people find their vintage pieces so I'm going to try to start listing where I find each of my pieces. This dress is a result of trading in some of my old clothes that I no longer wore at Crossroads in LA. When they take all of your clothes they ask if you want cash or store credit. I could see this dress hanging on the rack and I knew it was coming home with me. I think that was the only time I took store credit. :)

What's In My Jewelry Box

The other day I was reading Fops & Dandies and ran across a post about showing what's in your jewelry box. I really liked the idea of getting a peak into someone else's jewelry box. So often they are filled with treasures collected over the years. Mine is mostly filled with thrift store finds or random things I've collected for DIY projects that I never get around to. Here's what mine holds:

  • I love long necklaces and lockets. Currently, my most worn piece is this pocket watch necklace from UO but I would really like to find an antique one.
  • Vintage pins and brooches to be worn on jackets or sweaters or occasionally in my hair. One of these is a thrift store find, the other was my grandmother's.
  • Random odds and ends I've collected such as a shell with a hole (perfect for stringing on a necklace), pieces of sea glass and an old skeleton key.
  • Old beaded necklaces. Right now neither of these get worn because they are in desperate need of restringing and I'm afraid they might fall apart if worn.
  • I have really tiny wrists so most bracelets are much too big. Anytime I run across a bracelet at a thrift store that actually fits, I snatch it right up.

What I'm Wearing

tank top: American Apparel
jeans: Superfine
shoes: Minnetonka (thrifted)
scarf: vintage
sunglasses: vintage
on the iPod: My Morning Jacket

A while back I mentioned that I was considering trying out a pair of Minnetonka boots. I knew I'd never buy a new pair but I ran across a pair in my size at the thrift store last week. Perfect!

Root's Market

photos by Tom B.

It was such a beautiful day yesterday that my boyfriend and I headed out to Root's Market. We walked leisurely through all the stands looking at the antiques and collectibles. I ended up purchasing two decks of vintage Art Deco playing cards that I will use for hang tags on the clothes I'm selling and four pairs of vintage sunglasses. I got two pairs of big 80's glasses (one with clear lenses), a green pair from the 60's and these 50's gold and black cat eye glasses.

What I'm Wearing

dress: vintage
shoes: vintage
bag: vintage
sunnies: H&M

I found this dress at the thrift store a couple of weeks ago when my sister was visiting and I've been dying to wear it but the weather has not been cooperating. Finally today I got a break in the rain. I walked downtown to drop off my Ebay packages and went through the farmer's market. Everyone was closing down their booths so I didn't bother buying anything today. On a side note, I went to yoga this morning and while I'm not really sore, I feel like my joints are all a bit loose as if my arms and legs might fall off at any second. Let's hope not.

Collecting

On the way back from NYC a couple of weeks ago, we stopped in Hoboken to have dinner at a friend's place. Displayed throughout their apartment were the loveliest collections of vintage items. One cabinet held a collection of 1939 Worlds Fair memorabilia, another housed an army of vintage wedding cake toppers while still another held a set of Fire King Jadeite dishes. Seeing all of these pieces displayed so nicely got me thinking that it would be fun to start collecting. Not that I don't already collect all sorts of odds and ends from thrift stores and flea markets. Certainly, I do. But I would like to start concentrating on building a collection of similar items. The big question is: What to collect?

To help in my decision, I used some of my hard earned birthday money to purchase a couple of books from Amazon, Found Style and Flea Market Style. Both books are filled with page after page of rooms I could only dream of living in. Each is filled with odds and ends collected by their owners over the years and eclectically displayed amongst rooms of perfectly worn in vintage furniture. I haven't been able to stop looking at them.

Above are a few pages from Found Style. One of my favorite ideas from the books is the collection of vintage vanity mirrors. The workspace pictured is one of a hat-maker but it would also be the perfect sewing room.

Where as I got more ideas for specific collections from Found Style, I like Flea Market Style for showing ways of putting those collections together. I wish I could crawl right into the book and live in those rooms!

Here are a few ideas that have made the short list of things to collect.

Meet My Future Bathing Suit

A couple of summers ago I went on a vintage bathing suit hunt and came up with a few possible winners. Unfortunately it turned out that each had issues. One had weird bra cup thingies that looked lumpy no matter what I did to them, one had lost all of its elasticity and sagged in all the wrong places, one was super itchy. Needless to say none of them ever saw the beach. I gave up and decided I would just have to buy a new bathing suit. My hunt for a cute, demure one piece left me empty handed. I finally settled for a 70's style one piece from AA. I wore it exactly one time to a party at the pool on top of The Standard hotel in LA. Let's just say those types of parties aren't exactly for swimming. They are mostly for lounging around and looking cute in a bikini. Not really my thing. And let's also say that the AA bathing suit isn't really built for getting wet and holding everything in place and leave it at that.

Imagine my delite when I was browsing through Urban Outfitters site and came across an entire collection of vintage style one pieces. My favorite has to be the navy and red sailor inspired one but they have solids, florals, polka dots and even gingham. Super cute!

What I Actually Wore

OK, so sometimes a girl changes her mind. Or the weather changes it for her. I really wanted to wear the floral romper but when I thought about having to walk home after the show I was afraid I would be cold and there's not much that I hate as much as I hate being cold. So I changed into my standard of jeans, tee and boots. As you can see (sort of) I finally scored a wolf tee from the boy's department of the thrift store.

What I'm Wearing

romper: vintage (if I'm not careful I'm going to have to change the name of this blog to Rompers 'R Us)
shirt: American Apparel
boots: vintage
jacket: H&M

I had plans today that included wearing a pretty 50's dress I found at the thrift store and walking to the farmer's market to buy some fresh, local produce. The skies, it seems, had other plans. The constant downpour of rain kept me glued to the couch in my pj's watching episodes of old TV shows on Hulu. Oh well. Maybe tomorrow the weather will cooperate. Tonight my boyfriend and I are going to a benefit show at a local club to see Slimfit. Here's what I'm wearing. I guess you could say it's a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n roll.

More Posting at Sally Jane Vintage

Here are the rest of the auctions I'm feverishly working on. I think I've given up on trying to get them posted today so they'll be up tomorrow afternoon instead. Thanks again for stopping by!

Today at Sally Jane Vintage

Once again, here's a peek at the items going up in the store later today. Several rompers (as promised) and lots of ditsy florals too! And can I just say, that salmon maxi dress is a-ma-zing! I just wanted to float around the house in it all day. I'll also be listing some shoes but I haven't taken those photos yet. Better get to work. Thanks as always for stopping by!

What I'm Wearing

tank top: J. Perse
blazer: vintage
shorts: vintage

suspenders, scarf, hat & sunglasses: H&M

I had on a cute dress this morning but right before I left the house I threw on these odds and ends instead. I'm on my way to the thrift store and wanted to be able to crawl around and get dirty if need be. I'll let you know what I find!

Mamalicious and Smilin' Gal

After dropping off my packages at the post office this afternoon the weather was so darn nice I didn't want to go home quite yet. Instead I wandered over to Queen Street where all the cute little vintage shops are located. My favorite is a two in one shop, Mamalicious and Smilin' Gal Vintage. The place is over flowing with amazing vintage finds all at very fair prices. I never fail to see a dozen or so things that I want to take home. Today it was a set of four vintage Pyrex nesting bowls, his and hers vintage paint-by-number portraits of Jesus and Mary, a pair of vintage Givenchy sunglasses, an oversized woven leather bag and a feathered hat. I was good and didn't buy anything! But I did take the time to try on some of their adorable vintage dresses. The white crochet one is from the 60's and came with matching crochet bell bottoms (you can see them hanging on the door behind me). The blue is from the 50's and is so sweet. It tempted me the most but like I said, I was good!

What I'm Wearing

dress: vintage
jacket: vintage (little boy's)
socks: Sock Dreams
shoes: vintage
sunglasses: H&M
locket: vintage

Today is one of those days when I didn't put a lot of thought into what I am wearing and five minutes after leaving the house I wanted to change. Not that there's anything in particular wrong with this ensemble, I'm just not feeling too excited about it. I do really like the little floral print on the dress.

Romper Fix

This post is for reader, Carrie, who asked the following question: I found a really cool white romper with embroidery at the top..but the problem is it's too long and i feel like it looks like I'm wearing a big diaper baby thing when I roll up the bottom... Have any suggestions?

Whenever I go into a thrift store there are certain types of pieces for which I am always on the lookout. Right now I have my eyes open for little floral prints, high waisted anything and light, summery rompers. The other night I was making a quick run through one of my favorite thrift stores and I hit the jackpot. It seems that someone got the romper memo. I pulled romper after romper off of the rack all in sweet little floral prints. I guess some romper-loving gal cleaned out her closet and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think I ended up with about a dozen.

When Carrie first asked that question, my initial reaction was to cut off the legs and hem them. After trying one on, I quickly realized that this would not work. Not only are the legs too long, the crotch is kind of low. Instead I took a skinny belt, wrapped it around my waist and pulled the fabric of the romper up and over it. You could also use a big ribbon and tie it in a bow. This makes the piece take on a nice, 1940's type silhouette. Presto! Problem solved. I hope this works for you Carrie!

By the way, I'm only keeping one of the rompers I found so all the rest will be going up for sale in the store over the next few weeks (including this one which will go up on Thursday).

My New Toy

Saturday night, before heading out to see The National, we stopped to grab a bite to eat. The restaurant happened to be located right next to a thrift store so as soon as I finished my meal I decided I'd run in for a quick look around. Well, if you know me at all you know that "quick" and "thrift store" are words that should never be used in a sentence together. I already had a cart full of dresses and rompers (more on that later) when my boyfriend came in to let me know we had to run. When we got up to the register, this beauty was sitting on the counter, still in its original case, calling out my name. Who could resist that aqua blue color? Apparently not me! I love the click-clack noise of the keys and the zip of the paper being pulled though the machine. I looked up the model online, an Olympia De Luxe, and the best I can tell it was made in the mid-60's in Western Germany. I can't wait to use it!

What I'm Wearing

shirt: American Apparel
sweater: vintage
shorts: Lou Doillon for Lee Cooper
tights: American Apparel
boots: vintage

Last night we went to see The National play at a nearby college. They made my favorite album of last year so I was super excited to see them. Olivia, my boyfriend's niece and future fashionista, accompanied us for her first concert experience. Hi Olivia!

I mentioned these shorts, designed by Lou Doillon for Lee Cooper, in a previous post. With a little help from the über nice Steve at Lee Cooper, they arrived in my mailbox last week. Yay! Sometimes when you buy things online with out trying them on, they fall short (no pun intended) of your expectations. I can honestly say these are even better than I thought they would be. Just don't wait 'til the last second to hit the bathroom as there is quite a bit of unbuttoning to be done. :) And yes, I learned this the hard way last night. Ha!

Four Ways - Rompers

One of the best things about summer is wearing easy, comfy outfits. No more layers, no more worrying about the cold. A simple way to accomplish this? A romper of course! But how do you get away with wearing a romper without looking like you belong on Romper Room?

  • Since we're not quite into the hot days of summer just yet, I've paired the romper with tights. This works well for a dressier look, finished with a pair of high heeled oxfords and my favorite shrunken blazer.
  • It doesn't get any easier than this! Pair your romper with classic Chucks or Keds, throw on a pair of fun sunglasses and you're ready to go.
  • Staying just this side of too cutesy, pair the romper with a fitted cardigan and matching sandals for a girly look.
  • A day of flea market shopping in the sun? Martinis at lunch with your girl friends? Just match your romper with comfy wedge sandals and a wide brimmed hat and you're off!

What I'm Wearing

romper: vintage
tights: American Apparel
jacket: H&M
shoes: vintage
necklace: UO
sunglasses: H&M (men's dept.)

I bought this romper at the thrift store this week and even though it fits me perfectly I had every intention of selling it in the store. It's the perfect floral print and it has the cutest flutter sleeves and laces up the front kind of like a shoe and even has a little bow. However, once I got it home I realized that is has a strange dark mark across the front around the hips (it doesn't show up in the photos at all). It's a pretty faint mark but it didn't come out when I laundered it. It's one of those imperfections that doesn't bother me in the least, but I'm not sure if I should sell it because someone else might be bothered by it. I actually prefer when clothes show a little wear and tear. I'm not talking gaping holes, but a little wear around the edges is nice. What do you think? Is a little wear and tear OK when it comes to vintage clothing or do you expect it to be pristine?

New at Sally Jane Vintage

First I want to say thank you so much for all of your kind notes regarding the loss of my cat. Each and every note was a reason for me to think of her and smile. I know eventually the sadness will be replaced with only good memories and your notes are definitely helping that process along.

Now, on to the business of the day. Here's your super sneak peek at all of the items that will be posting in the store today. Be sure to stop in and check it out. Thanks as always!

UPDATE: I don't know why Ebay is not showing the jacket as being listed. It is! And I can see it on my end but it's not showing up in their search engine. So, for now, here's a link to the listing. I'm trying to get it straightened out. Thanks!
