Rock Ford Plantation

a
photos by Tom b.

romper: 50s bathing suit
jacket: vintage Levis
purse: 60s straw bag
shoes: thrifted woven flats

Today we finally got a break from a little rain we've been having so Tom and I decided to get out of the house for a bit. We were heading down to an old abandoned amusement park that sits by the Conestoga River when we passed a sign for Rock Ford Plantation. We made an impromptu turn and ended up driving out to the plantation instead. When we arrived, I remembered we had visited once before, years ago when we were visiting PA while still living in Alabama.

I'm so glad we made that turn because it was just the loveliest place to walk around. I love going to touristy places like this on slow Monday afternoons when no one else is around. We had the whole place to ourselves save for one friendly black cat and a herd of does and their fawns eating crab apples off the ground in the adjoining field. It was so peaceful to walk around and imaging what life must have been like in the late 1700s when the plantation was built.

b

There were terrible things to imagine, such as the probability of slaves being owned there (people seem to think only Southerners owned slaves, but that's not the case), and the cold northern winters one would have endured with no heat. But there were also fun things to imagine like the children that must have played in those fields, women sitting on the big porches with quilts in their laps, and how many generations of deer must have eaten from those crab apple trees. Oh, and the fact that George Washington (most likely) had tea there! Seriously, I'm sitting on bricks that George Washington walked on.

oh my gosh i bought the EXACT same swimsuit on etsy not even a month ago! that's crazy! when vintage things match up it makes it all the better than when real life things match up!

That's so funny! What are the chances?! There can't be many suits like this left out there. :)

That romper is incredible! I love it so much! If only a few more people other than exclusive amount of people wore it more often! You look beautiful as always with so much style it's astounding how you manage such two qualities so perfectly! The jean jacket only adds to the ensemble! You look so 50s right now that it seems as though you are from the 50s and traveled through a time machine to this period of time!

That sounds like a wonderful afternoon. I adore your swimsuit...I've been looking for something similar, but no dice so far.

My husband and I always go to historic sites on our vacations and off days. We visited the oldest graveyard in Boston last year where Cotton and Increase Mather are buried. Its exciting and a bit surreal to know that you're walking where famed historical figures once did.

i saw three of that exact suit up on etsy a while ago; one in a lighter blue, one in pink, and another in a yellow! i so wish i could have bought them all, now that i've seen your photographs, even just to hang up on my wall and look at, like i did with my one vintage swim suit/romper!

What a fantastic outfit, the DJ & straw bag are perfect with those togs (aka swimsuit). When I lived in Oxford (UK) I used to have to touch the buildings just to connect to the history, just like you with the pathway. I would marvel to think of the English Kings & Queens who had been there been there centuries ago. Amazing stuff.

Wearing a vintage bathing suit as a romper is SUCH a good idea. Love it. I love the little ruffly detail at the neckline, and the tie at the waist, and well, all of it. Your bag and shows are also really nice.
