Messy Hair

12-french-bun-hair-how-to_sm[1]

Most days I like to wear my hair long and loose. But we all have those bad hair days when nothing seems to work and not even a hat is fixing the problem. My inclination on those days is to break out the pony tail but what I'd really like is a nice messy bun a la cool French girls. That's one thing I've never quite been able to master. Until today that is! I discovered this cute tutorial via A Cup of Jo yesterday and couldn't wait to try it out. It seems so simple but it really did the trick. No more walking around with a hair rubber band on my wrist! Now I just need to find a good place to stash a few bobby pins instead.

Oh, and I also really want to try out some dry shampoo. Anyone have any experience with that? Recommendations?

I wish my hair was just a tiny bit longer! I have been throwing it back into a mixture of french braids and a low bun lately, but, I'd love to try something new like this for those bad hair days. What is dry shampoo? I haven't even heard of it before!

I have tried 3 different dry shampoos now and I like the cheapest one the best.

First one I tried was Rene Furterer (french and expensive) I didn't like the smell at all, it was terrible. I got this as a sample at the salon I work in, I would have never spent so much money on it.

Second one I tried was this one

http://www.sallybeauty.com/Dry-Shampoo/SBS-381228,default,pd.html

from Sally beauty supply. It has a nice pleasant smell and was not too white (the clay or powder in it can turn your hair whitish) Definitely my fave of the 3!

The one I am using now is by TiGI (bedhead) and has a nice orangey smell. It is ok but I feel like it is also a bit too white and also clogs/coats my scalp pores.

I would totally recommend the second one for price and smell. I believe it's the oldest one on the market and they are doing something right to be around that long!

Also to do buns and chignons I would suggest doing a bit of back combing first, if your hair is any sort of fine it will make the chignon larger and stay in place better! Ok, that is my 2 cents from a professional Hair Chik! Good luck with the dry shampoo's. I love using them the 2nd or 3rd day to refresh the oily look that can happen over time especially on the fringe and around the face. It' gives you volume back after not washing for a few days!

Love it! My hair has a lot of wave in it so it tends to hold styles well. The one thing I like about it ;) I have had extensive experience with dry shampoo...as in, I've tried them all! Sprays, powders, high-end, low-end, colored, etc. I'll give you 2 rec's - Psssssst Instant Spray Shampoo being far and away my favorite. It is the best! And, the best price - you can find it at Walgreens for about $5.99, or online at drugstore.com if there's not a Walgreens nearby. This stuff is really great for those oily spots and actually (at least appears to) give hair more volume. Plus, they've really improved the formula over the past couple of years and now it has a very light fresh scent. The other rec for you is Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk. It's 3x the price at $18 a pop (available at Sephora), but is greener as it comes w/o parabens and phthalates. However, you're getting less product. It depends on what's most important to you. Other brands I did not have as much success with (don't work as well, or just don't smell fresh), and if you're going with a non-spray powder, you can forget it - they're just too messy. To use: I spray it on my roots, fluff with my hands, then finish getting ready and brush my hair before I leave. That usually does the trick but if not, a little quick rubbing gets any remaining white from the product out. Hope this helps! Loving the new Etsy items - hate I missed out on those woven brogues!

I used to use Bumble & Bumble's dry shampoo, which comes in a small spray bottle but it ended up leaving my hair feeling greasy. Which is sort of counterproductive for dry shampoo.

Now I use Hair Fix, which smells better and is organic:
http://www.myhairfix.com/

And pretty cheap also - I used to spend $30 on the B&B stuff and it was 3oz.

I can't wait until my hair gets long enough to bun-up vs clip up.

I have heard good things about Klorane, too. Every time I tried to get it at Ricky's it was sold out.

Also, just to clarify, the B&B bottle was a 3oz spray and went really quickly. The Hair Fix is in a bottle and it lasts forever.

I don't know about in America but there's a brand here called Batiste? I think it is. It's pretty good anyway. I saw this on a cup of Jo yesterday too and want to try it out.

I admittedly HATE washing my hair, so dry shampoo seemed like the answer for me, but I hated the one I tried even more that I dislike the hair washing. Hair Fix sounds excellent--can't wait to try it!

I'm also into the dry shampoo, and recently started making my own due to our current Trying Economic Times. Not sure how homemade would work on long hair (mine's short and not very thick), but it's so easy you might want to try it.

I use oatmeal, but I've heard cornmeal works too. I grind a couple scoops up in a clean coffee grinder until it's powdery. My hair is brown, so I add a few dashes of cocoa powder for color to avoid that white effect. Just mix it up, put it in a jar, and you're done. If you're into scent, you can add a couple drops of a perfume or oil.

When I use it, I just rub it in, leave for a couple minutes, and then brush and shake it out, leaning over the tub or sink. That way the mess just goes down the drain.

I would suggest KMS or Aveda. I've had very good experiences with both brand's products. But I look more for frizz calming... I don't have to worry about grease as much because I have pretty curly full hair. You seem like your hair is really full though too so you wouldn't have to worry about it weighing your hair down.

I agree with Helen. Batiste is the best. It's really cheap (usually about $3 a can which lasts forever), comes in three scents and works wonders (though you really want to makes sure you brush it all out for fear of looking like you have the roots of a 90 year old or are working a halloween-style white spritz....

I read in an article that Jonson baby talcum powder does the trick so I tried with some talcum powder at home and it worked quite well. Just pour some out and massage into scalp and brush. I liked the finish better than any dry-shampoo I have tried.

oh i love this--so much that i blogged about it earlier today too! as for the dry shampoo a hairstylist friend suggested using baby powder to start out with and see if you like it...i just sprinkle a bit on my part and bangs and voila!

i love your hair, i can't wait until my hair is this long again! i cut it uber short about a year ago, but i'm growing it back now. slowly and painfully (awkward mullet stage included!).

cute! as far as dry shampoo goes my absolute favorite is Klorane (not sure how it's spelled) it's a french product I think.

Oh and I find that bobby pins are great for clipping money together in your purse!

Best of luck and you have a very cute blog xx

a 1 to 1 combination of cornstarch and finely ground cornmeal works well. you can add a drop of your favorite essential oil if you would like to make it smell nice!

just a word of warning re:talc (which is in many commercial dry shampoos): you may want to do a little research into the concerns some people have about the connections between talc and higher rates of cancer.

lulu organics, based in new york, makes a talc-free, organic dry shampoo which i've heard lovely things about. it's expensive, though! try making your own!

(p.s.... first time commenter- i think your blog is wonderful!)

YES exactly the kind of tutorial ive always wanted to find. you always know where to find the best gems on the internet <3

This is a cute 'do, I shall have to try it soon!

As for dry shampoo, I just use either corn starch or baby powder. Corn starch really soaks up the oil, so don't use too much, especially if you have fine hair, but is great if you are a greaseball. I use baby powder when I'm just starting to get oily around my bangs.

Cheers,
Sarah Louise

Bad result.
Why?
My hair hate me.

This isn't about dry shampoo, but in my life long quest to shower as little as possible I have been washing my hair with baking soda for 6 months with awesome results. My hair is about 8 inches below my shoulders, i only have to wash about every 4 or 5 days and my hair, which is usually very fine and on the oily side, is much thicker feeling and has a lot more texture. Just another idea!

I really really wish my hair was long enough to do this! It looks so amazing.

Also, I hate dry shampoo and I have tried at least a dozen kinds. (I work for a beauty company).

I use cornstarch!

I first bought a real dry shampoo, and it was good, but I just got five applications out of it before it was empty! I checked the ingredients, and realized the only useful ingredient was cornstarch. The rest was just fragrance and preservatives, and of course the big, useless aerosol bottle.

Now I just take a little cornstarch in my hands, and distribute it evenly, in many stages, all over the oily parts. Then I wait a bit to let it work while I finish my makeup, and lastly brush out well. It's great!

the little one is only 11 bucks, so its a good try and it does last, i dont need a lot to make it work.

I created this messy bun on my hair today and I must confess I'm gonna do this again. It's grate. I can do this without rubber or bobby pins, just by binding my hair, but this one is much more solid

My Granny on my Mom's side used baby powder in between washes. My Grandmother on my Dad's side had incredibly long white hair in a bun just like in the tutorial, and she always used to say to me, "don't cut that hair!" I should have listened! :)
