Back to NYC

nyc

This week, on Thursday to be exact, Tom and I are heading back to NYC for the weekend. Tom usually acts as our trip planner and tour guide since he lived in the city for years but this time he will be mostly working which leaves me a lot of free time alone in the city. So... what to do?

New York gals, I'd love to hear your suggestions about what to do while I'm in the city. Are there any good art shows? Vintage shops I shouldn't miss? Vegetarian food? Will anyone else be in the city and want to hang out or do a little shopping?

I checked the weather forecast and squealed out loud when I saw it's supposed to be 60s and sunny. I'm really looking forward to this trip! Especially since last time we were there is was in the teens and snowing.

I cant believe your coming! Honestly every time you say your coming, I get a little star-struck. I think you should check out Beacon's Closet in park slope, but there's another vintage store along 5th ave around Union street in park slope that I think you would love. If I can find their card, I will post back. Also I believe there is a nice Vintage shop on 12th street close to Greenwich Village. Oh, I feel like a horrible guide, I never know the streets because I just wander around and bump into places. If the weather is a little chilly you might also want to check out Alice's Tea Cup on 64th and Lexington.

Sorry for the insanely long comment - here are a few of my favorite veg friendly spots. Two of my favorite places to eat are Red Bamboo and Green Symphony. Red Bamboo is a sitdown restaurant serving soul food inspired veg meals. It's in the village and pretty easy to get to on the subway.
Green Symphony is more like a veg friendly, health focused convenience store near Time's Square. They've got veg and vegan meals as well as great fresh juices. It's tiny so might be tricky to find but worth it if you're in the area.
I also love Babycakes on the lower east side. (http://www.babycakesnyc.com/)
If you're in Hell's Kitchen Vynl and Bocca di Bacco (a winebar) are also great spots to hit.

I would give my right arm to be able to see the British actor Ben Whishaw on stage. He's performing off Broadway in a production called 'The Pride' at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, between Bleecker and Hudson Street (I think until 28 March).

again!! you lucky lady, you!

hmm...as a fellow veggie I'd say TeaNY in the LES; curly's www.curlyslunch.com; this tiny place called Atlas (breakfast/lunch)Atlas Cafe 73 2ND AVENUE (4th & 2nd). I'm sure I'm forgetting someplace crucial but I've only had half a cup of coffee this morning

have fun!

If you're coming to Brooklyn, you should check out the Manhattan Inn or Moto. Those are my favorite places in my neighborhood!

TeaNY is really great - unfortunately they had a small fire a few months ago and have been closed. I'd suggest checking their website to see whether they're back up and running before heading over.

Yeah, TeaNY's was still closed when I was there recently. But you should for sure check out Fox and Fawn, this AMAZING vintage shop where everything is like 25 dollars. It's in the Lower East Side on Suffolk, right near Delancey. It's adorable and the girls are really nice, and it's just one of the best vintage stores I've ever been to (but I'm from Australia, the vintage shopping isn't as good here).

Oh dear I just googled Fox and Fawn and they've relocated to Brooklyn...570 Manhattan Ave to be exact! Enjoy!

you should check out one of the housing works thrift shops...there's tons of awesome merchandise, it's super cheap, and it all goes to charity. i work at the w. 10th street location in the west village (although i'm out of town this week, unfortunately, so i won't be in), but i can also recommend the soho location. and if you're in the village, you should eat at dojo on w. 4th st...great food and great prices!

hello there :) i'm chantilly, and i rarely comment, but figured i'd throw in my two cents for your trip.

my expertise is mostly brooklyn... the williamsburg and bushwick areas are definitely where i do most of my hanging-outing. so i'll just shout out some recs :)

i think you'd be very happy if you came out to beacon's closet in williamsburg. and salvation army is right off the stop on bedford ave, on the way.

also on the bedford strip: thai tai has $2.50 glasses of wine (!!) and of course veggie meals. pretty cheap and filling, especially if you go during their lunch special. verb cafe and/ or blackbird cafe are also great hangs. down a little further on metropolitan is the roebling tea room... i don't know if you're into tea, but they have an EXTENSIVE selection, and it's really cute inside!

bushwick shout out: if you make it out to my hood, check out urban jungle. huge warehouse-type place full of cheap vintage clothes.

for drinks, definitely check out myopenbar.com or www.coovents.com... they tell you happy hours by neighborhood.

that's it! i'll be around this weekend, so if you'd like to meet up and go to any of these places, let me know... chantillysongs at gmail :)

hopefully the weather is nice there because it's been flooded quite a bit over the past two days!!!!

I don't know where the vintage shops are, but the museums are awesome. I think the Tim Burton shocase is open right now if you want to get that before it closes in April. I know a lot of people who have gone there recently.

If my mother wasn't coming to town I would totally show you around and take you to fun shops. Another time!
My all time favorite vintage shop is The Family Jewels. It's on 23rd between 6th and 7th avenue and it's amazing. I always walk out with something from there. Pippin is a jewelry store not far from there on I believe 17th or 18th street, between 6th and 7th avenue. They just have drawers and drawers full of stuff.

I'm not a veggie, but I've been to Quantum Leap a few times and the food was great. There are a couple in the city I believe...

Have fun, we should finally have some good weather by the time you get here!!

I suggest Housing Works Chelsea Thrift Shop (143 West 17th St). A little bit on the pricy side, but has really great stuff. And after all - the money goes to people in need.

You should check out Search and Destroy on St. Mark's Place... my favorite nyc vintage shop for sure :)

Oh and someone already mentioned this, but red bamboo has the best vegetarian food everrrr... I highly highly recommend it.

Caravan of Dreams is great — one of my faves for veg food. Curley's is ok too -- i live down the street -- but only if you get the pop 500 wrap or a strawberry soy-milkshake!

Zachery's smile (2 locations) has mix of vinty & new. I wear tons of their dresses (they have great sales!).

E 11th street is always a good stroll for clothes, so is E 9th & E 7th (Tokyo Joe's, Tokio 7, fabulous fanny's, cadillac's castle...)

Metropolis Vintage is pretty good too (3rd ave). Rome & Ethan are great.

The Burton show is fantastic. You might also like visiting the Frick and the Morgan Library (nice, old things). There's a Jeff Koon's curated show at the new museum (bowery) called skin fruit; it's fun. A couple really good Maurice Cattelan's are there.

If you like soft serve & pie, check out momofuku milk on e 13th (between 2nd & 3rd) for some crazy delicious flavors.

There's so much more too!!

For the best vegetarian thai food EVER, you must visit PUKK. (also, gorgeous minimalist interior design)

Definitely go to Babycakes. Best vegan cupcakes ever!!!

Also, if you like Mexican food, there's La Barra which is right next door. They have veggie food and from 5-7 they have $3 tacos, $3 beers and $5 wine and sangria.

Yum :)
