What I'm Wearing

dress: vintage
jacket: vintage (little boy's)
socks: Sock Dreams
shoes: vintage
sunglasses: H&M
locket: vintage

Today is one of those days when I didn't put a lot of thought into what I am wearing and five minutes after leaving the house I wanted to change. Not that there's anything in particular wrong with this ensemble, I'm just not feeling too excited about it. I do really like the little floral print on the dress.

Romper Fix

This post is for reader, Carrie, who asked the following question: I found a really cool white romper with embroidery at the top..but the problem is it's too long and i feel like it looks like I'm wearing a big diaper baby thing when I roll up the bottom... Have any suggestions?

Whenever I go into a thrift store there are certain types of pieces for which I am always on the lookout. Right now I have my eyes open for little floral prints, high waisted anything and light, summery rompers. The other night I was making a quick run through one of my favorite thrift stores and I hit the jackpot. It seems that someone got the romper memo. I pulled romper after romper off of the rack all in sweet little floral prints. I guess some romper-loving gal cleaned out her closet and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think I ended up with about a dozen.

When Carrie first asked that question, my initial reaction was to cut off the legs and hem them. After trying one on, I quickly realized that this would not work. Not only are the legs too long, the crotch is kind of low. Instead I took a skinny belt, wrapped it around my waist and pulled the fabric of the romper up and over it. You could also use a big ribbon and tie it in a bow. This makes the piece take on a nice, 1940's type silhouette. Presto! Problem solved. I hope this works for you Carrie!

By the way, I'm only keeping one of the rompers I found so all the rest will be going up for sale in the store over the next few weeks (including this one which will go up on Thursday).

My New Toy

Saturday night, before heading out to see The National, we stopped to grab a bite to eat. The restaurant happened to be located right next to a thrift store so as soon as I finished my meal I decided I'd run in for a quick look around. Well, if you know me at all you know that "quick" and "thrift store" are words that should never be used in a sentence together. I already had a cart full of dresses and rompers (more on that later) when my boyfriend came in to let me know we had to run. When we got up to the register, this beauty was sitting on the counter, still in its original case, calling out my name. Who could resist that aqua blue color? Apparently not me! I love the click-clack noise of the keys and the zip of the paper being pulled though the machine. I looked up the model online, an Olympia De Luxe, and the best I can tell it was made in the mid-60's in Western Germany. I can't wait to use it!

What I'm Wearing

shirt: American Apparel
sweater: vintage
shorts: Lou Doillon for Lee Cooper
tights: American Apparel
boots: vintage

Last night we went to see The National play at a nearby college. They made my favorite album of last year so I was super excited to see them. Olivia, my boyfriend's niece and future fashionista, accompanied us for her first concert experience. Hi Olivia!

I mentioned these shorts, designed by Lou Doillon for Lee Cooper, in a previous post. With a little help from the über nice Steve at Lee Cooper, they arrived in my mailbox last week. Yay! Sometimes when you buy things online with out trying them on, they fall short (no pun intended) of your expectations. I can honestly say these are even better than I thought they would be. Just don't wait 'til the last second to hit the bathroom as there is quite a bit of unbuttoning to be done. :) And yes, I learned this the hard way last night. Ha!

Four Ways - Rompers

One of the best things about summer is wearing easy, comfy outfits. No more layers, no more worrying about the cold. A simple way to accomplish this? A romper of course! But how do you get away with wearing a romper without looking like you belong on Romper Room?
  • Since we're not quite into the hot days of summer just yet, I've paired the romper with tights. This works well for a dressier look, finished with a pair of high heeled oxfords and my favorite shrunken blazer.
  • It doesn't get any easier than this! Pair your romper with classic Chucks or Keds, throw on a pair of fun sunglasses and you're ready to go.
  • Staying just this side of too cutesy, pair the romper with a fitted cardigan and matching sandals for a girly look.
  • A day of flea market shopping in the sun? Martinis at lunch with your girl friends? Just match your romper with comfy wedge sandals and a wide brimmed hat and you're off!

I bought this romper at the thrift store this week and even though it fits me perfectly I had every intention of selling it in the store. It's the perfect floral print and it has the cutest flutter sleeves and laces up the front kind of like a shoe and even has a little bow. However, once I got it home I realized that is has a strange dark mark across the front around the hips (it doesn't show up in the photos at all). It's a pretty faint mark but it didn't come out when I laundered it. It's one of those imperfections that doesn't bother me in the least, but I'm not sure if I should sell it because someone else might be bothered by it. I actually prefer when clothes show a little wear and tear. I'm not talking gaping holes, but a little wear around the edges is nice. What do you think? Is a little wear and tear OK when it comes to vintage clothing or do you expect it to be pristine?

New at Sally Jane Vintage

First I want to say thank you so much for all of your kind notes regarding the loss of my cat. Each and every note was a reason for me to think of her and smile. I know eventually the sadness will be replaced with only good memories and your notes are definitely helping that process along.

Now, on to the business of the day. Here's your super sneak peek at all of the items that will be posting in the store today. Be sure to stop in and check it out. Thanks as always!

UPDATE: I don't know why Ebay is not showing the jacket as being listed. It is! And I can see it on my end but it's not showing up in their search engine. So, for now, here's a link to the listing. I'm trying to get it straightened out. Thanks!
