Snow Boots

In a week I depart on my adventure cross country with the final destination being a very cold Pennsylvania winter. It's going to be a far cry from the sunny, mild Los Angeles winters I've become accustomed to. One of the things I've been thinking about is all the winter gear I'm going to need in order to stay nice and toasty. In particular I've been searching for a pair of warm snow boots. Ideally I'd like to find a vintage pair. I'm dreaming that the thrift stores there will be overflowing with vintage snow boots. Something like the ones I've seen on Ebay would do nicely:

I've already expressed my disdain for Uggs and I don't want anything that's going to make me look like I'm about to run the Iditarod. I'll buy used or vintage leather, but not new leather. I don't understand the snow-boot-with-a-heel thing either. Maybe that's just me. Any suggestions from you cold weather girls out there?

I live in Utah so I'd classify myself as an expert. I don't get the heel boots either. Make sure they're waterproof and skid proof, with a rubbersole. Fur inside is nice. I have a pair I got a year or 2 ago at Old Navy.

where are you moving to in pa? i live in pittsburgh, and it's been pretty nice for this time of year. it was 60 today. rubber soles in a wedge are great. i've got vintage brown-red leather to the knee with wool inside (kinda like the brown-red ones you have posted)...they work quite well.

I don't understand the snow boot with a heel either!

I recently got some flat ankle boots just to keep the part of my foot that would be exposed by my normal sans-socks, toe-cleavage shoes warm when it's too toasty... but I love vintage riding boots, especially Aigner. Watch out for Nine West though--easily scuffed and SLIPPERY, in a very embarrassing way.

A nice pair of leather boots and thick woolen socks really does the job for me.
Although I live here up north I haven't owned a pair of snow boots since I was twelve.
I guess I have a thick skin or something. :)

Being a New England girl, I always wear my Sorel's when it gets cold. They're the only thing that keeps my feet nice and toasty. Check out the Caribou style, those are the ones that I have. I found mine at a thrift store in Massachusetts, but they would be new leather if you bought them unused. They probably have used ones on ebay though. Good luck with Northeast winters!

Thanks for all the suggestions! For now I'm going to stick with my Wellies and some thick wool socks and see how that goes. I'll be keeping my eye out for a cool pair of vintage snow boots.

Vintage snow boots would be so cool! Let me know if you find one. I live in MN - and I had the hardest time finding a snowboot this year! I don't like Uggs either or do the heel thing because I walk through the snow all the time. I settled on a pair of flat ones from Roxy. But I'm still on the lookout for a great pair.

I've recently begun to love a brand called Bare Traps--they do the 70's snow bunny thing to perfection--but they are little, um, lacking, in their internet presence. Do you have a DSW?

Thanks In Yr Fshn - I googled Bare Traps and actually found a decent looking, all man-made pair on the QVC site of all places!
