The Egde of Love

collage
I recently realized that since moving from Los Angeles to Pennsylvania I haven't cracked open a single fashion magazine. The job I had in LA was fashion oriented and I was spoiled in that we had a subscription to every fashion magazine under the sun. Every month I would collect a huge stack of mags from around the world on my desk. Now, I don't have a single subscription (they're so expensive!) and I've been pleasantly surprised at how much I don't miss it at all. Rather than rely on the glossies for inspiration I've been more than happy to turn to fellow bloggers, street style sites, old movies and online magazines for all of my fashion fixes. My latest fixation has fallen upon the movie The Edge of Love. I haven't yet seen it and I rarely get out to the theater to see movies like this but I may have to make an exception this time. Costume designer April Ferry had this to say about the wardrobe...

"My inspiration for the clothes for The Edge of Love came from many sources. The most important one was John Maybury, the director. Dresses and Wellies were his idea and that really defines the most important look of the film. Of course, I studied all the books on Dylan Thomas's life and looked at all the available pictures of him and his associates. There is wonderful research of that era in London. I immersed myself in as much as I could collect. I also made a wedding suit for Vera (Kiera) that was influenced by the real suit that was saved from the real woman."

I love the use of floral with chunky knit and boots. What a great way to transition your summer wardrobe right into autumn. If you go to the movie's official site they even have a "Get The Look" section with links to items they recommend. Unfortunately the links don't seem to be working properly at this time. Perhaps they'll remedy that soon. I can tell you the links were supposed to lead to a UK based store called Oasis. I hadn't heard of it before so I have no idea about the quality of their pieces. I browsed around a bit on the site and I did find several things that caught my eye. Like this and this and this and these. Any UK ladies out there have any clue?

I usually use this website http://www.discountmagazines.com/ to get my magazines. The ones in them are too expensive. And I'm very excited for The Edge of Love. I'm a huge Kiera Knightly fan.

Hi,
Oasis is about on par with Topshop for the quality of there clothes, pretty good for high street. Since they dont ship internationally I would try ebay uk, as they always have a lot of Oasis stuff on.

Oasis is a good shop, the quality of their clothes is good, i would say better than TopShop because i find TopShop's quality to be quite poor (buttons falling off on first wear, loose stitching etc)
It used to be very plain and sell work-wear kind of stuff but lately they have been making some really nice items (like the stuff you linked!)
i am dying for some knitted cardigans like the ones in the movie!

Oasis isn't too bad as far as high street stuff goes. It's pretty much similar in price range to Topshop, though I think the quality is ever so slightly better, but then it's been a while since I bought anything from there.

The costumes look lovely in edge of love. I don't think I'll see it, but the costumes are fab to look at!

Even though I don't think the film is very good, the styling is really amazing! and I think Oasis is okay, a bit overpriced but they have good sales. If you want anything especially I can check it out for you next time the sales on :)

Oasis is a really great shop! Last year I went there to get a dress for a ball and I found THE dress. It was silver and with a puffball hem. I nearly cried it was so beautiful!!!

The movie should be out in September here and I really want to see it because of the look of course, wich is undeniably charming, but also because I liked Dylan Thomas's poetry and short stories since so far :-)

I am so impatient, until it comes to France...

I geeked out over the fashion so much that I did a take on one of their outfits.

As a Lit major and fashion lover this movie is right up my alley.

I agree with most of the above re Oasis – a little better than Topshop. In fact I still have a tweed skirt from there I bought around 7 years ago, and it's not too shabby yet!
I LOVE the floral dress + chunky knit thing, and have worn plenty this Autumn and Winter. Hmm, I might tomorrow, now, too!

Oasis is a great shop, more expensive than TopShop and also caters to those of us that have to wear ye old business casual everyday (crap!). Sale at Christmas are deadly, which is why I travel home with an empty suitcase, they don't ship outside of UK, but sisters and mothers will gladly purchase and carry back to US! Have a couple of pieces from there i've had for a long long time - good quality.

ok i HAVE to see that

Well, you can actually get some of the clothes from Oasis att asos.com! They ship almost anywhere. Unfortunately the delivery rate depends on how heavy stuff you order, so I won't be ordering shoes again...

I'm a new reader to your blog, just found it a few days! A blog that lead to a blog that lead to a blog you know :-)

Oooooh, thanks for posting!

I would say items from Oasis are better quality than Topshop if you're familiar with them? If you ever want me to pick you something up and post it to you seeing as they don't ship to the states I'll be more than happy =]

Thanks Samantha. That's very thoughtful of you. I'll keep in it mind. :)

Oasis is also selling in Germany, if anybody here is interested. At least I know the have franchise shops in Kaufhof very often. Re the quality I think it's ok, still I think they're often quite overpriced.
