Ebay Schmebay (AGAIN!)

Dear Abby,
I have this friend. Let's call him Ebay. Me and Ebay go way back. We've been friends for years and for the past couple of years we've even been working together. It's been up and down but lately things have been going really well. The problem is he recently changed. His payment policies, that is. And didn't tell me anything about it. He just up and decided he didn't want to accept money orders anymore. Just like that. I feel betrayed! Instead, he went and cancelled all of my listing without telling me first! How cold is that? All I'm asking for is a little heads up when he's going to change. Is that too much to ask? Reeallly?

Luckily I was able to get all of my auctions back up and running. So if anyone out there was watching an item or bidding on an item, I'm super sorry that the auction you were watching disappeared. But not to fret. All is well now. All of the listing have been reinstated. Thanks so much.

I've already pretty much quit ebay; I never win any auctions anyway

Oh dear...that's so not nice of Ebay.

hmm...

to be honest i think i would purchase more things from your shop over etsy. ebay has changed, and it't just too much of a hassle even as a buyer...takes days for them to let you know you've won something.

Well, that's not very nice. I do prefer Etsy in the sense that there's no bidding involved.

i would love some sally jane on etsy, its so much cheaper to list, & your listings last 3 months, as well for buyers no bidding wars, & you can ask the price what you are hoping to receive! xo tara-lynn

i don't mean this the way it's going to sound, because i'm not the hugest fan of eBay anymore myself, but they actually did send out some sort of notification of the switch over for payment methods, didn't they? it's complete bs that they'd just cancel your auctions, though. i know a lot of sellers were up in arms over the fact that some of their best customers were those who paid exclusively by money order or check.

Ebay sounds like a guy who has problems in taking notice of others feelings.

Thanks for your sympathetic comments.

I'm trying to work out the logistics of Etsy in my head but I still haven't made a decision.

Rachel: I'm sure they must have sent out some sort of notification but I didn't receive it or didn't see it. Oh well! It's all fixed now.

The Girl: Thanks! I'll check it out.

As a seller, I choose Etsy, no doubt! But if we're talking about vintage, as a buyer I still look at Ebay first. The auctions thing works well for me, I certainly loose items because of outbidders or just because I forget to bid (!), but the ending prices are often better than on Etsy. I think on Etsy often things tend to be totally overpriced for their real conditions...

Jennifer,

Sorry to hear ebay took down your auctions yet again! They indeed have changed their polices for the worst over the past two years... while moaning and complaining about these changes a year ago (I used to sell on ebay, and then etsy), we came up for the idea for Market Publique (http://www.marketpublique.com). We are finally launching in about a month, March 8th.

Not only will the marketplace be dedicated to vintage, but we believe that it will also offer the best of both worlds (ebay, etsy).

First, you will be able to post listings as auctions, fixed price or both, for the same price ($0.25), have them start at the price you choose and decide how long you want them to run for. Plus we'll host all the images, and you get up to 15 images included in the listing price. You can see our listing page here:
http://blog.marketpublique.com/search/listing+page

For all you buyers who commented, you will get the benefit of trying to get an item for less using an auction, or skip the bidding and buy it immediately if the seller is offering that option.

Feel free to visit our site if you have questions, or email us at howdy [at] marketpublique.com

Ebay really is the worst boyfriend sometime, completely inconsiderate and he thinks he's hot shit. Give him another chance, and if he lets you down again, DUMP him! There are other auctioning sights in the internet sea.

oooh I would be thrilled if you decided to go with etsy! I hate ebay and even though I swoon over your listings I just can't bring myself to endure ebay for them!

well that's nice to know. i certainly didn't get the memo. i'm glad i changed my payment policy to 'paypal only'! ebay can be such a drag sometimes, but can be so great, too.

hahha, that was awesome. the letter that is. ebay, on the contrary, can be so rude!!!

yes yes! come to Etsy! I shop there WAAAAY more. Ebay is unpleasant to shop and bidding is stressful. I'm an etsy girl hands down.

i definitely sympathize! ebay was such a wonderful concept a few years ago, but the whole thing has just gotten so... rotten! i was selling for less than a year on ebay before i decided to switch to etsy. (i'm still in the process of setting up the etsy shop, but already i'm SO much happier over there!)

etsy seems to attract an all-around more pleasant crowd. it feels like an actual community i want to be part of. ebay on the other hand seems to be filling up with buyers who know they can get away with murder and are using the ridiculous policy changes to blackmail sellers into giving them free things.

i opened my ebay shop because i was tired of working in petty, unhappy situations. ebay seems to be going more and more in that direction though.
i didn't mean to go off on such a tangent, but i've been feeling very passionate about the subject lately :)
if you want to discuss the ebay/etsy thing in more depth, shoot me an email. (deaverish@gmail.com)
i recently read an article that outlined some more (very painful!) policy changes ebay is about to make. ebay doesn't seem to be very eager to share these new rules with sellers, but it's such a bummer to find out about them only because they've cancelled all your listings!
end of rant :)
