Lula Issue 11
scans from TFS
It seems the long awaited issue 11 of Lula Magazine is finally out in the world. I've read early reviews complaining about everything from the new font to the fact that it's "less sugary" than previous issues. I'll refrain from forming any opinions about it until I get my hands on a copy. It always baffles me how quickly people are willing to criticize others' creative pursuits. It seems people aren't happy that the magazine has evolved. Doesn't everyone evolve or at least hope to? I'd hate to think if this blog was the exact same today as it was when I started it three years ago!
At any rate, I do like this spread with its ghostly images. The credits for the piece read like a who's who of the fashion world... Kate & Laura Mulleany, Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Antonoff, Autumn De Wilde. It's an article (you can read it scanned on TFS) with accompanying photos about iconic white dresses. While I do love the way these dresses look in the photos, actually wearing a white is still a scary prospect for me. Me, of hot chocolate stains and grimy cat paws. Maybe I'll take a leap and try it soon.

Winter Dresses
A.P.C.
I don't have any outfit photos to show you this morning, as I usually would on a Monday, because winter arrived in full force over the past couple of days and I wasn't quite prepared. I was going to take some this morning when I awoke and saw the warm sunlight pouring in through the windows but then I checked the weather and realized all that "warm" sunlight was just an illusion. It's 25 degrees out there!
Topshop
Instead I spent the morning in search of the one thing that seems to elude my wardrobe; long sleeved dresses. Why is it that so many dresses offered in winter collections are still short sleeves or at most, three-quarter sleeves? I'm a fan of cardigans as much as the next gal, but sometimes I don't want to worry about all those layers.
Steven Alan
Once I really started looking I was pleasantly surprised by the selection that I found. Granted, I'm not going to be affording A.P.C. or Steven Alan any time soon, but there are affordable options from Modcloth and Topshop. The grey striped dress from Modcloth should be arriving in my mailbox any day now.
Modcloth
Hopefully I can bolster my wardrobe with a few of these choices (or I really love this one from Dear Creatures) so that getting dressed on these super cold mornings won't seem like such a chore. Today will be spent in my pajamas, getting packages ready to send out. Maybe I'll actually get dressed tomorrow!

Loni Vintage Giveaway
One of my longtime sponsors, Loni Vintage, thought it would be fun to giveaway this oversized pair of sunglasses this week and I couldn't agree more. Sunglasses are often neglected as an accessory for winter, but these are perfect for blocking that snowy glare or hiding behind after a night of too many holiday cocktails. All you have to do for a chance to call them your own is leave a comment on this post. Any random thought will do... tell me what you're reading, your favorite holiday indulgence, your pet's name. The first thing that pops into your head!

A Belated Happy Thanksgiving
- H&M bird print dress
- 60s camel cardigan
- Hue tights
- Swedish Hasbeen t-strap clogs
- vintage wool beret
Did everyone in the States have a nice Thanksgiving holiday? It was super dreary and grey here and I heard rumors of snow showers in the area. We mostly stayed in and didn't eat turkey. :) Tom's family has a tradition of gathering for pumpkin pie and freshly made whip cream after dinner so we braved the weather for that. I suppose pumpkin pie was about the only thing that would make me get out in that sort of cold rainy night.
As a thank you to all of my blog readers, I'm going to join the Black Friday bandwagon and offer 15% off everything in the Etsy shop for the rest of the weekend! When you checkout, use the code "SallySaysSo" to redeem your discount.

Street Style Favorites
photos from Stockholm Street Style, Vanessa Jackman, Hel-looks, Blushing Ambition
I have to admit that since returning from my trip, I'm finding it hard to want to wear anything but pajamas. When I flew to Alabama I didn't want to check a bag so I packed really light; just one dress, a pair of jeans, a few sweaters and one pair of boots. Even with packing light, I spent as much time as possible lounging around in my pajamas. Isn't that what vacations are for?
I dug up some of my favorite recent street style shots to inspire me to get back into my closet and actually start getting dressed again. I'm seeing a bit of a pattern here... lots of capes, lots of brown, navy and black, brown shoes with black tights. I think I can, I think I can...

Vintage Loves
I'm sure it's not news to most of you (it was to me) that Free People has gotten in on the vintage game. They're offering a "rare collection of vintage pieces that captures the spirit of the 1900s through the 1980s, a travel journal bringing the past to life. " I have to admit that I'm smitten with the collection... the well worn corduroys, the perfectly broken in leather bags and belts and the clothing in earthy muted hues. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the prices. Yowza! While all the pieces are lovely, I feel like I could find comparable pieces on Etsy for a fraction of the price.
I would really like to get my hands on one of these woven market bags. I've seen them around but I don't know where to find one. Does anyone have any clue?

Happy To Be Home

Let me start by saying a HUGE thank you to all of the gals who pitched in with guest posts in my absence last week. I'll second what Siri said in her post... you gals are a hard act to follow! I knew it would be great, but all of my expectations were blown away! It was so much fun to tune into the blog everyday and be greeted by another wonderful surprise. Thank you all so very much!
All of their help afforded me a much needed and much enjoyed break. I spent the entire week in Alabama visiting family. It's always nice to go home for a while and not think about work! Now that I'm back though... back to work it is! I'll be hard at work tomorrow shipping out all the orders that piled up while I was away. If you bought something from the Etsy shop last week, thanks for your patience and your package will be on its way tomorrow.
Just before I left I picked up this 30s wool jacket at the new vintage store in Lancaster that I mentioned previously (I'm not trying to be cryptic, I just can't remember the name of it... it used to be Zap Home). I saw it hanging there when I visited a few weeks ago and hadn't been able to stop thinking about it. I was sure it wouldn't fit, as these types of jackets are usually too big for me, but as soon as I slipped it on, I knew it had to be mine! It's so incredibly warm! It's so true when you hear that things just aren't made the way they used to be. My favorite part is the plaid collar zips up to become a hood.
I wore it today when Tom and I went out for a walk and to run boring errands like going to the bank and mailing bills. On our way home we cut through the cemetery that holds my most favorite tree in all of Lancaster. It's a giant ginkgo that blankets the ground with its bright yellow leaves every fall. It's usually the last tree to turn and drop its leaves and I excitedly await the change every year. I was afraid I would miss it while I was away but it was all golden and perfect when I got home.

Fancy Fancy Fancy
Hello dears! I am Ashley of Fancy Fine, bringing up the rear of the Guest Blog Train. I was beyond giddy when Jennifer asked me to contribute, so I wanted to show something befitting my blog's name. Something fancy! So here it is, a fancy cocktail dress in the most perfect shade of creamy yellow, worn with a glittery J. Crew belt and my favorite vintage Ferragamos (which tragically lost one of their bows the other day). There aren't enough cocktail parties in the world to satisfy my love for dressing up, so I often just do it during the day and for no reason. A trip to the grocery store? Pull out the sparkle! I'm particularly excited for the holiday season because it means several of my favorite party dresses will get to see some action. Even if it's only at the post office or my favorite burger joint.

The Olden Days
Hello! I'm Starr from A Thought is the Blossom here to take over the Sally Jane blog for a day. When Jennifer told me that she was going to visit family in Alabama, I immediately thought of my vacation to Mobile last Fall. My sister and I drove there to visit our family too, though we spent a lot of our time digging through antique malls in the downtown historic district. The place was a gold mine when it came to vintage treasures!
The digging and the buying were both fun, but I think more than anything I enjoyed the time I spent with my grandma. I asked her so many questions about her childhood and her parents childhoods – she must have been so annoyed with me by the end. She told me tales about the gypsies that tried to kidnap my great grandma on her walks home from school –they succeeded in shanghaiing one of her brothers for a number of years before eventually returning him home– and she told me all about my great grandfather and how he used to get in trouble for dipping girls hair in ink and sticking tacks in their chairs when he was in school. She also told me a fascinating story about my great, great grandfather.
80s Coat & Boots: Saver's / Vintage Sweater & Jantzen Blouse: Goodwill / Tights: Zara / 70s Dress: Midtown Antique Mall / Vintage Skeleton Key Charm: Blue Moon Antique Mall, DIY
According to her grandmother (my great, great grandmother), when Vicksburg was being besieged by General Grant, things were going badly for the citizens. They were running out of food and other supplies and had no choice but to eat horses and print the newspaper on the back of wallpaper –the paper was a strong line of support that helped keep the morale of the people. At the age of 13, most likely by the influence of his family, my great, great grandfather rode out of Vicksburg and into Lower Peach Tree, AL on a mule one night, sneaking through the enemy lines that surrounded the city.
It's hard to believe that a story like that is true, but according to my great, great grandmother, it happened just like that. How tragic would it have been if that story would have stopped at my grandmother?

not-so-secret Santa
(Curious? Just click the photo to find out where it's all from.)
Hi guys! Siri here from Ringo, Have a Banana! First, can I just stop and say: hot dang, you ladies are a tough act to follow! I wish I had an outfit post for you all (and access to nature, that would be awesome) but a)my camera batteries just died and b)I'm too busy freaking out about how cold it's supposed to get here next week to wrap my mind around anything but tracking down one of these babies. So instead, I thought I'd throw down a bit of Christmas gifting inspiration since, judging by the general muzak situation on Fifth Ave. yesterday, it 'tis indeed that time of the year again...
Above are a few things I'd love to be able to give to my friends and family (though honestly I wouldn't mind receiving just about all of them myself, eheh!) I've always loved giving gifts (and gift wrapping, oooh) and I feel like the older I get, the more interested I am in giving than receiving. That said, let me just point out that providing a stand mixer to a friend who bakes is really just the gift that keeps on giving back, am I right??
(You know the drill: click away!)
Still, as much as I love to give--I have needs too! Well ok, more like silly, frivolous wants, but hey, tomato/tomaaaahto. A girl's gotta dream: of fancy drawers, Swedish boots, snuggly sweaters (though this one has been sold out in the size I need for weeks #$%@ it!) and the joys of having your favorite magazines appear at your doorstep instead of pounding the pavement month after month trying to pry their whereabouts out of tight-lipped newsstand Nazis. One thing I do always gift myself each year is a big pot of paperwhites. Their smell reminds me of home, and it really is such a wonder to have a little plot of flowers blooming in your bedroom window.
Anyways, all this fantastical consumerism aside, I do firmly believe that homemade is best. Most of my family will probably be receiving care packages of cookies and peanut butter cups, and I'm already looking forward to coming up with my own Christmas card design. So, aaah...anyone know a good DIY manual for how to build your own Canon 5d???
<3
Ringo!

Hunting at Sunset
Hello, lovely Sally Jane Vintage readers! This is Maria of Lulu Letty, coming to you from the pretty state of Michigan. You see it's hunting season here- the hunting of what, I have no clue. Being that I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit and not my current rural location, I'm not quite used to being so in the mix of this pastime. When we moved here last year, we were clueless as to what was happening around us and would wander around the gorgeous fields taking photos of me wearing my vintage furs. Pretty much the worst thing you can do. After having a few close calls with hunters in action, we have now learned our lesson- wear bright clothes and stay in open areas. As you can see, my mustard yellow tights are just the thing to keep the bullets away! The rest of my outfit, while not bright, includes several pieces that I've owned for years- the beret and sweater from my college days, the plaid skirt for my first post-grad job in Boston, and my cherished vintage Ferragamos were a gift to myself four years ago. Now I don't know about you, but I just love reworking old items from my wardrobe and giving them a new lease on life.
Photos by Cole. Thanks, darling!

Portland Leaves
Hello! I'm Anja from Clever Nettle, bringing you a few little scenes from the currently incredible leaf situation that is happening here in Portland. I was really tempted to do a Sally Jane inspired outfit, but let's be real- I don't have the right kind of beret and that's so crucial! We're having windy nights, so in the morning there are so many gorgeous leaves all over the ground. I wish they would last longer, I'll take a few more months of fall and then we can skip right to the nice parts of spring, ok? I'm wearing a 1940's plaid blouse from Betty Jayne's estate sale, she was a ballerina in the 20's and 30's and had a gigantic wardrobe, there was a whole mini room that acted as a walk-in closet! The cardigan and pants were thrifted (the pants are actually going to be in my vintage shop soon!), the boots are Chelsea Crew via ModCloth, and the bag is my new prized posession- one of Alice aka Forestbound's creations. It's amazing! The colors are perfect, the leather patch is so soft- Alice does it right every time. I'm trying to get outside as much as I can when it's not rainy, because the classic Pacific Northwest gray days are here and I need to check out all these leaves before they turn to mush! On that note, the rain has started up again outside. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the guest posts coming up this week, thanks to Jennifer for inviting me over here! Sorry for the small text, I keep trying to change it but blogger hates me and I can't get anything to work right, haha. I don't know how all of you manage to use it so well!

50's Dress, a clothing trade w/Kristine

Veil, a gift from my mother
If you haven't figured it out yet, I have taken control over Sally Jane Vintage... *maniacal laugh* OK, really, Jennifer sweetly invited me to guest-blog for a day, and of course I snagged the chance as soon as I could... My name is Aya, and I run a little blog entitled Strawberry Koi.
It's amazing how much shorter the days have gotten. Having a little one, it's sometimes a tad difficult to take photos, and we (my photographer/hubby and I) love to go during the evening after we've completed our tasks for the day... but it seems like daylight comes in at about 5:45 anymore and pretty much wrecks the whole idea! Ah well, it also means Fall is at its best, where you can get away with light cardigans and tights and be ok... which is perfect!
...I can see you asking if I truly wore this veil with my outfit... Or at least I would, but no, it was just a bit of fun for the photos, and pulling it out of the closest after 5 1/2 years was incredibly nostalgic. My mother actually made it as a wedding gift for me back in '05... and I still love it to pieces. I like to picture having a daughter one day, wearing it for her big day... we'll see!
Anyway, it was a pleasure posting here, thank you so much Jennifer! Dear me, speaking of Fall and what not... do you realize Thanksgiving and CHRISTMAS are right around the corner?? Ugh, I'm in trouble..

So... this will be my last post before I head south for the week. But not to worry! I've rounded up a whole slew of my favorite fellow bloggin' gals to lend a hand next week. I can't wait to see what they come up with! It should be a really fun week around the blog.
There's really not much else to report from around these parts because it's been work, work, work for the past few days. Here I am in another outfit with very conspicuous knees. I'm getting used to the whole idea. Also, someone commented that they'd heard the Hansel from Basel tights fell apart after the first wear, but I found the contrary to be true. These were quite sturdy and held up well after a day's wear.
