The NEETest Book

The decision to buy the NEET Magazine five year anniversary book was sort of an easy one. The hard part is picking which cover to go with! There are five covers to choose from, each illustrated by a talented artist and are available in both hard and soft covers. I haven’t seen the inside of the book yet except for a sneak preview of a few pages on the NEET blog. I was scrolling down the page and then, whoa! Hello! There’s my face! I’m so very, very honored and excited to be featured as one of the five bloggers in the book. The book includes several photos that Tom has taken for the blog and a sure-to-be awkward interview from yours truly. I just placed my order and I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Style Diaries: World Fashion from Berlin to Tokyo

I was honored to be asked to participate in the Prestel book Style Diaries: World Fashion from Berlin to Tokyo. I didn't want to bend the spine of the book far enough to be able to scan the pages so these are actually the proofs of the pages that were included in the book. I know you've seen all these photos before but I thought you might like to see a peek of how the book is laid out.

I'm so excited to be included amongst several of my favorite bloggers (Anja! Aya! Carrie!), gals I consider friends even though we've never met. But what amazes me most about the book is all of the bloggers included that I wasn't familiar with... what a vast blogging world we're all participating in! I'm looking forward to delving deeper into the book and discovering more great blogs to follow.

Sally Jane Vintage in Italian Glamour

This is one of the coolest things that has happened to me in a long time! Italian Glamour included my shop among their guide to online vintage shopping. I was so excited when they contacted me about the piece and it's always a bit surreal to see my photos in print. I hadn't been able to get my hands on a copy so the always super sweet Anna from The Cupcake Diary sent me the most wonderful bundle of goodies including the magazine. She was also thoughtful enough to include a translation for those of us who are not Italian savvy.

"Jennifer Martin is a US vintage hunter who mixes 60s looks with a Dietrich style. 'I only wear vintage dresses a lot older than me' she says. 'One day I found a 40s dress but it was not my size. I had an idea and thought to sell it. I did and then I sold a lot of other out-of-size purchases. The e-store which is now my job came with the blog. I buy, wear and sell at the speed of light.' "

The text made me giggle a little bit as it's not exactly a direct quote from what I sent in but I guess that's what you get when you translate something from English to Italian and then back to English.

Sally Jane Vintage in Little Thing Magazine

I was super excited when I was contact by Little Thing Magazine to take part in their new issue. I'd never been lucky enough to lay my hands on a copy but the scans I'd seen online were so nice I felt honored to be included. I just received my copy in the mail today and I must say, they did such a wonderful job putting the piece together. I was a bit giddy as I flipped through the magazine and came upon all of my photos so prettily laid out on the pages.

And the rest of the magazine is just as nice! Of course I can't read a word of it but with so many beautiful photos to look at, that's hardly an issue. Here's a bit of the Q&A that I sent in (I'm not sure how much of this they actually used):

Can you give us a brief intro of yourself, background?
My name is Jennifer and I live in Pennsylvania. I am originally from Alabama and also lived in Los Angeles for three years. I started Sally Jane Vintage about a year and a half ago while I was living in LA.

How has your day been so far?
Right now it's pouring down snow outside so I'm bundled up on the couch with my cat. The fire is going in the fireplace and I'm drinking hot cocoa. So far it's good!

How would you describe your style?
My style is eclectic and nostalgic. I love mixing vintage pieces with new pieces. It seems I have two sides - one very delicate and feminine and the other a bit of a tom-boy.

If people could take one feeling or message from your styling, what would you want it to be?
Wear what you love no matter the trends. Just be yourself and have confidence and you'll look good in anything. Cliche, but so true!

How do you normally come up with a concept for a style?
I take inspiration from everything around me. It may be a photo on a street style blog or a character in a movie or just colors in a painting.

Who is your favourite designer?
Hands down Emma Fletcher for Lyell. I could live in her clothes everyday.

Can you describe the so-called FASHION in your definition?
There's a quote that says "fashion fades, style is eternal". A personal style is always more appealing than what is "in fashion".

What types of material interest you most?
As much as I am pining for spring at the moment my favorite materials are ones worn in colder weather. Something about tweeds and wools and plaids always make me feel nostalgic.

Name some items you like to collect in life?
I'm a collector by nature. Vintage dresses for one thing! I also collect anything with birds on it, vintage sewing supplies and vintage cameras. I would like to start collecting vintage luggage.

What’s your favorite little things?
My favorite little things are my cats! I have a rescued stray named Jack that only has one eye and one ear and he's my constant companion.

717 Magazine

You may recall a while back I mentioned that a photographer and reporter visited with Tom and me for a piece on loft living for a regional magazine. Well, we've finally gotten our hands on a copy and I have to say it's a bit surreal to see our place in print! We're happy with the way it turned out (except for Tom's poor Polish last name being butchered - yikes!). Both of the cats also made their magazine debuts. I know you've all met Jack before but Buddie's a bit more elusive. She was quite the ham that day, posing for photos on the stairs. If you look closely, you're sure to recognize that brick wall from all of my store photos. I didn't plan on taking photos in our office space that day or I would have spruced things up a bit more. But now you can see where all of the SJV work is done. Click on the pages below to get larger, legible versions.

Mankind Magazine

When Design for Mankind asked me to answer a few questions for an article they were doing on wearing handmade clothing for an upcoming issue of Mankind Mag, I have to admit I wasn’t familiar with the magazine. Boy, have I been missing out! The newest issue "focuses on the growing popularity of the handmade market." Inside you can find all sorts of inspiration from artists, designers and craftmakers. I was tickled pink when Stephanie, the editor and one woman dynamo behind NEET Magazine, contacted me to be a part of the new issue.
