Babes in the Woods

1

As soon as I saw these photos on Anja's blog I knew they'd be one of those things that spreads like wildfire through the blogging world. The editorial, aptly called Babes in the Woods, was styled by Charlotte Stokes and photographed by Candice Meyer. I instantly set about Google stalking both of them to find more of their work. One of my goals for the next year is to try my hand at styling so I'm devouring all the inspiration I can get my hands on. This one is definitely going in the file!

I have mad respect for all the East Coast gals that are braving this frigid weather on a daily basis for the sake of outfit photos. If it hadn't been for pesky errands like the post office and the grocery store I would have stayed in my pajamas all day long. As it were, errands had to be run, so I figured I'd squeeze in a few photos as well.

3

So, here I am in what's left of our almost white Christmas. We were supposed to get lots more, but luckily we were spared. Just a couple of inches that will be washed away by the rain we're suppose to get this weekend. Speaking of this weekend, what is everyone doing for New Year's Eve? I'm sure mine will be pretty low key, although it would be fun to have an excuse to wear a fancy dress.

Post Holiday Wish List

sale

APC dress, Orla Kiely dress, APC toggle coat, APC boots, Rachel Comey boots, Topshop heels

Did everyone have a lovely holiday weekend? Ours was quite nice. This was the first Christmas that Tom and I spent in Pennsylvania. We usually drive down to Alabama for a visit this time of year. I had my fingers crossed for a white Christmas but the snow arrived a day too late. The funny thing is, my family had a white Christmas in Alabama! Just my luck.

The best thing about the holidays being over (besides all the leftover food!) are the end of season sales when all the pretty things I've been eying are finally marked down. That's what gift cards are for, right?!

Party Dresses from 13Bees Vintage

1

Is anyone else amazed at just how quickly this holiday season is flying by?! Christmas is already upon us and New Year's will be here before you know it. I've always thought the most wonderful thing about New Year's Eve is it's the one time of year when you can get dressed to the nines, completely over the top, and no one bats an eye.

If you're still looking for a way to be the best dressed gal at the party, hurry yourself over to 13Bees Vintage. Holy moly there's a lot of amazing vintage in that shop! I'm usually a little black dress kind of gal, myself and Megan's definitely got that department covered.

But if that's not your thing, perhaps you prefer a pop of color like a bright pink cummerbund. Or if you're daring, a bright turquoise chiffon number. Once again, Megan's got you covered!

And the best news yet is, Megan is graciously offering 15% off everything in her shop to SJV readers! Just use the code "sallyjane" when you checkout. The offer is good through midnight (EST) on December 30th.

2

And just to torture ourselves sufficiently, here's a look at a few of the dresses that have already found new homes. I imagine that green velvet number is going to be hosting some sort of fabulous Christmas soiree!

Bonnie & Clyde

Photographed by Aram Bedrossian | Styled by Carissa Cirino | Models: Ollie Edwards & Elise Digby

This week's photographer spotlight comes in the form of the talented Aram Bedrossian. There are many lovely photos to choose from in his repertoire but of course, since you know by now I'm a sucker for anything Bonnie & Clyde related, it was an easy choice to run with these.

Also, props to the stylist since I find myself wanting pretty much every piece of clothing used in the shoot. If you want to check out the details (and the credits) you can see larger versions of the photos here.

New Vintage Treasures

1

Here are a few things that have made their way into my closet from the thrift store over the last month or so. The first two dresses were found hiding in the children's section of a thrift store. It seems the people that worked there didn't recognize the difference between a 60s mini dress and a child's dress. Great, since everyone else that picks vintage there missed them! The first one reminds me a lot of the white Lover dresses. The second one is wool and quickly becoming a favorite with all the cold weather we're having.

The 20s wool knit sailor dress didn't come from a thrift store (that would be the greatest thrifting luck ever). I found it at a local vintage shop and couldn't resist the striped sailor collar. It's a bit on the itchy side, but definitely falls into the "will suffer for fashion" category!

2

Speaking of knits, I've been on the lookout lately for hand knit (or crocheted) things. I love the fact that they're all so unique and the little imperfections just make them even more endearing. That cheerful red cardigan will most likely make it into my Christmas day outfit. The cableknit wool skirt reminds me of one I saw on the Topshop site. I really love it, but I haven't figure out how to wear it yet.

I'm trying to keep the boot collection under control but I couldn't resist adding these two pair. I think I've sold a pair or two exactly like the ankle boots in the past, so I'm keeping these for myself. The super tall vintage riding boots came from a thrift store that sells mostly furniture so I was surprised to find these. Actually I only found one on the shoe shelf then had to search the entire store for its mate. I even had one of the gals that works there helping me look! I was determined not to leave without them. They need a little doctoring around the back zipper but after that they be perfect!

Artsy Monday

photos by Tom b.

b

Friday marked Tom's last day of class before winter break so I accompanied him to the college this morning, in part to help him pick up a couple of packages and in part because he told me about the current art installation and how much he thought I would like it. Honestly, with the below freezing temperatures we've been having day in and day out, it takes a lot to get me out of the house these days. I bundled up in a couple of layers of tights and my Alexa Chung for Madewell dress that I've been looking for an excuse to wear. I ordered it when the collection debuted and it took about 2 months to arrive!

c

Anyhoo... Tom was right about the art hanging in the school's gallery right now. There are three artists exhibiting. First was Ron Klein's wall installation comprised of an array of materials from dice and poker chips to sweetgum balls and porcupine quills, all nailed right into the wall. The quills were my favorite part, but I just kept thinking about the poor person that's going to have to repair all those nail holes when the exhibit is done.

Then we saw Duncan Johnson's collages that are made using reclaimed wood, graphite and nails. These were my favorite pieces by far. The colors and textures were just perfect. I'd love the have that biggest piece in my house.

d

Last we saw Glenn Goldberg's pointillist flowers and birds. They were bright and cheerful and just the thing you'd love to stare at on a cold dreary day like today. In the end, I was quite glad I braved the cold to discover some new artists. Now hopefully I don't have to leave the house for the rest of the week!

150 Years of Vassar

a

This week's photography spotlight is not about one photographer, rather one collection of photography. 150 Years of Vassar is just that... a history of the university told through 150 years of photography. The photos range from the women's 1901 basketball team in their wool turtlenecks and Gibson girl hairdos through present day. Of course my interest in the photos waned around 1969 when the photos turned color (and boys were admitted to the university!).

It was so much fun to scroll through the photos and see the evolution of fashion from completely modest long sleeve dresses to floral cotton smocks to preppy skirts and loafers. Here are just a few of my favorites. Well, there are a lot of photos here, but I had a lot of favorites!

Etsy Update: 60s Mini Dresses

a

A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to come across a collection of 60s mini dresses. I've just added the first of them to the Etsy shop this afternoon. Such fun dresses! One of the requests that I get most often regarding the shop is for larger sizes, so it's worth noting that many of these dress fall into that category.

Te chichi

Untitled-1

When I first saw the images from Te chichi's winter collection on Starr's blog they instantly caught my eye for their (as Starr so aptly put it) Anthropologie-esque look. Of course the site, being in Japanese, is nearly impossible for me to navigate, but I knew I wanted to see more. A little sleuthing led me to their online shop where they have the individual pieces laid out in that clean, simple way that so many Japanese sites and magazines use.

Sometimes the styling of a lookbook can outshine the actual pieces of clothing, but that's not so in this case. I love the simple clean lines and the neutral color palette. I wouldn't mind having any of these hanging in my closet!

12-12-10

It's funny how just when you think you have things really together, life tends to throw a wrench right into the middle of everything. I was finally getting back on track after my vacation and really into the swing of blogging again until early this week when everything went topsy-turvy. I try to keep the blog a happy place, a creative outlet where I unleash all my frivolous thoughts about fashion and such but I have to admit, it's been quite a somber week around our house.

The details are all too terrible to write in detail but Tom and I had quite a scare last Monday morning as we awoke to the sound of sirens and the smell of smoke in our house. We had only moments to gather a few belongings before the firemen were at our door telling us to leave our home. When all was done and we were able to return to our house a few hours later, we were only minorly inconvenienced compare to our neighbors who lost everything in the fire.

In the face of such real life events it's sometimes hard to return to a regular routine of blogging (or anything, really) but I think a return to normalcy is just the thing that will get my mind off all of it. It feels strange to be writing about it, but if felt even more strange not to.

c

In an effort to get back into the routine of things I went out yesterday to take a few outfit photos. By myself. In the cold. While it was raining. It wasn't exactly the most fun I've had taking photos, but I was determined to get through it and in the end, I'm glad I did.

As soon as I got back from taking these, Tom and I finally committed to something we've been talking about for ages; adopting another furry critter from the local Humane League! We knew we wanted to add a third cat to the bunch, but I was so nervous about going to pick one out. There are so many and I knew I'd want to take all of them home with me! In the end, we brought home a little guy named Stewie (the name may not stick). He's five years old, has adorable white paws and loves to look out the window. I think he's going to be just the thing I need to get my mind off the last week.

Etsy Update: Winter Coats

a

I guess my denial of winter came to an end yesterday when the snow started falling. There's no denying it now! I'm totally surrendering to the cold and the best way to do that is by wrapping up in a big warm coat. All of these are now available in the Etsy shop.

The Photography of William Christenberry

242c_William Christenberry, House and Car

I'd like to start featuring the art of some of my favorite photographers on the blog. I'll do my best to make it a regular feature but blogger discipline isn't exactly my strong point. When I decided to start this feature, the first photographer that came to mind was William Christenberry.

Christenberry has a way of capturing the South that makes me feel nostalgic and a bit homesick. That's probably because his work centers mostly in Alabama and focuses on the kind of roadside barns and derelict buildings that are unique to the area. At times he revisits the same spot, year after year, documenting the changes to a dilapidated building. Other times he focuses on the spreading kudzu, a vine that can grow a foot a day and take over a forest in one summer.

If you're interested in more, his photography is just one aspect of his creative endeavors. He recreates model of some of the buildings he's photographed in great detail. He also does some haunting work with images of the Klan after witnessing a rally at a young age.

Etsy Update: Fall Leaves

a

Here's a little sneak peek at today's Etsy shop update. I think I'm in a bit of denial about it feeling more and more like winter outside everyday because I keep updating the shop with pretty fall-hued pieces. I just can't help myself! I'm not quite ready to let go of fall yet, I suppose. All of these pieces are being added to the Etsy shop today.

The NEETest Book

a

The decision to buy the NEET Magazine five year anniversary book was sort of an easy one. The hard part is picking which cover to go with! There are five covers to choose from, each illustrated by a talented artist and are available in both hard and soft covers. You can buy your copy from Blurb (there's a code for free shipping on the NEET blog).

I haven’t seen the inside of the book yet except for a sneak preview of a few pages on the NEET blog. I was scrolling down the page and then, whoa! Hello! There’s my face! I’m so very, very honored and excited to be featured as one of the five bloggers in the book. The book includes several photos that Tom has taken for the blog and a sure-to-be awkward interview from yours truly. I just placed my order and I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Annie Monroe by James D. Kelly

a

As soon as I saw a few of these shots posted on The Clothes Horse I was completely smitten. I had the exact same reaction to the photos as Rebecca... haircut! Isn't Annie's perfectly fringed 'do enviable? I love the way these photos look like stills straight out of a Jean-Luc Godard film. There are lots more of these on photographer James D. Kelly's site so you should definitely go have a look-see. I had such a hard time picking just a few to post here.

photos by Tom b.

This morning Tom and I drove to this little side-of-the-road place called Echoes From The Past that is part junk yard, part salvage yard, part animal sanctuary and a whole lotta awesome. There are several old barns to wander through where you can find everything from rusty old tools to piles of lace doilies.

c

There's an old man and woman that run the place and live in a house on the land. They even had their portraits (and their dogs!) painted in a mural on the side of one of the buildings. The field next to the salvage yard is home to a couple of horses, a huge turkey and several chickens and roosters. It's such a fun place to go and ramble.

b

This morning Tom and I were on a mission to find some old shutters for redoing the front of our house. Luckily we found just the thing! Of course they'll have to stay in our basement for the winter until they can be repainted and hung in the spring. I was also super tempted to bring home that mirrored door to keep in my office. I don't have a full length mirror and it would be perfect leaning up against the wall. Perhaps I'll have to go back!
